Who am I?
My name is María and I was born in Salamanca, a Spanish city that is renowned for its university and historical monuments. As a kid, I loved reading, and Quino was one of my favourite authors. You may have heard of him: he created Mafalda. This little fictional girl would always talk about how she wanted to become a translator so she could contribute to people understanding each other and, eventually, signing word peace. I guess that kind of left a mark in me, because many years later I did my Bachelor’s Degree in Translation and Interpreting at the University of Salamanca, one of the top schools in the country.
This opened a new chapter of my life that took me to live in other countries, make friends in foreign languages and dive in the culture, history and literature of the United Kingdom, France and Portugal. As a foodie and amateur photographer, I am always travelling, exploring new gastronomies and landscapes.
A nose stuck in a book
I have been working as a professional translator and proofreader for six years now, and I must say that I enjoy it even more with every passing day. After my Bachelor’s Degree, I took my Master’s in Translation for the Publishing World at the University of Málaga. Thanks to this, publishing houses have been among my clients almost since the beginning of my career. I translate comic books, short stories and novels for them. In addition, I offer proofreading and reading services and I belong to ACE Traductores, a state-level association for which I organise events to give visibility to our work as book translators.
As you probably have guessed by now, literature is one of my biggest passions, and it has taken me to start a PhD at the Complutense University of Madrid. There, I do research on the link between translation and the recovery of forgotten female authors.
Always guided by curiosity
Book translation may be one of my main fields of expertise, but it is not the only one. In fact, so far, I have worked in a wide variety of projects, and I am not only talking about my experience as a freelancer. Besides being a freelance translator and proofreader, I have worked as an in-house linguist for a digital marketing agency and, at the moment, I am also an associate lecturer at university. I strongly believe that all these experiences have taught me something new and special, such as the organisational ability and flexibility skills that every freelancer needs or the creativity side of marketing, as well as the patience and self-criticism needed to teach.
Actually, I think that what defines me the most as a professional (and probably as a person, too) is my curiosity. It is definitely the reason why I want to learn more from other cultures and showcase them in my own; it is the reason why I overthink every single word until I am sure that it is the right fit; it is the reason why I want to make knowledge as universal as possible. Because of all of this, I encourage you to send me a message describing the nature of your project, whatever it is: you may wake up my curiosity and have me ready to work sooner than you expected.
