French to Spanish professional translator
French
Bonjour! Do you need to convey your message to a Spanish audience and cannot find the right words? I am sure that it does sound better in French, but I can get Spanish to come quite close! If you are one of the many French companies looking to find their way across the Spanish market, or a Spanish company that wants to import their ideas across the Pyrenees, I suggest that you hire someone who has actually used French. In my case, I lived in the beautiful Western city of Angers for a year. I brought back many memories from that experience, along with a bullet-proof French.
Close, but not Similar
It is quite common for languages with the same origin, such as Romance languages, to seem easier to learn. However, one cannot let their guard down, because behind those supposedly recognisable structures lies a complex grammar and a very rich and particular language. Therefore, when translating from French into Spanish, you need to be extra careful to avoid making mistakes that can end up being quite costly.
An Example: Vous vs. Usted
To illustrate those differences, let me share an example. One of the most common words of the French language is “vous”, which in Spanish is literally translated as “usted”. However, do Spaniards use “usted” to refer to their teachers? I am afraid that my students use “tú” from the very beginning of our relationship. Let’s imagine that this cultural imbalance is ignored and we translate such a dialog literally. We would lose at a stroke all credibility that the author had struggled to achieve.
